cell phone wireless - more towers but expensive dupe of laptop wireless
'far as I know, the cell phone wireless device is a way to get internet access via cell towers which maybe would be worth the expense if you don't have enough wireless access points for the laptop around to suit you
That helps!
That is very helpful to me, but I am more curious about how they work together, and how they connect to each other. Does the Air Card from the cell provider come with a hookup to the Laptop, or does the owner of the laptop need to get aspecific card to match the air card from the cell provider?
Cell phone / air card / WIFI
Cell phones are a single device that has multiple functions, some even have internet access. An air card is provided by a cell phone carrier but are meant to be part of a laptops hardware to give you wireless internet access on your laptop, a totally different device and not to be confused with a cell phone. WIFI is a wireless network interface card in your laptop or desktop to allow network connection to a wireless router to give you access to the router network and the internet.

air card and cell phone are seperate services
I happen to use many Internet access services and currently have 'air card' services through both Sprint and Verizon. The PCMCIA slot card plugs into my laptop but I also sometimes plut it into my PDA. It's an older PDA with the PCMCIA slot. In addition to my air cards, from the same cell companies, I can get their voice plan for a cell phone. They told me it was a combo package that they could offer, or I could just purchase the air card services. The other side of the combo plans would be to purchase a wireless data plan specifically for my cell phone where I would then need to connect the cell phone to my PDA or Laptop via data cable or bluetooth to browse the Internet. The air card price is $45 per month. The cell data package is $80 per month for unlimited data.. that's $80 over and above what I'm to pay for voice services. You can see why I chose the air card package, only $45/month. A third option not talked about much in the industry is having a standard voice cell plan but then connect that cell phone to the Internet via dialup modem. Yep, old technology 'dialup' but I can connect my cell phone to the Internet where my cost is 1 cent per minute. The feature is called Circuit Switch Data and is just about as old as the cell phone itself -- been around for years. I use a U.S. company for the dialup, www.BAMnet.com, see their website for details on Circuit Switched Data, also, that's how I'm paying only 1 cent via their prepaid Internet access plans. My Verizon cell phone connects at 33k speeds which is perfect for my PDA. And works OK for my notebook but since I'm only using it for POP3 type email, I'm very happy with the rather slow 33k connection speed. I have a T-Mobile voice plan as well. That connects at 14k speed via dialup. I'm almost an expert on this so if you have questions, ask and I'll see about answering the best I can.
